Musicabana will mark the largest gathering of Cuban artists in a generation, featuring performances by music legends and some of today’s hottest acts, including Pablo Milanés, Carlos Varela, Los Van Van, Orquesta Aragón, Havana d’Primera, Ibeyi, Pedrito Martinez, Yoruba Andabo, Juana Bacallao & Tiembla Tierra, Interactivo, Kelvis Ochoa, and Adonis & Osain del Monte, among others. International superstars Sean Paul and Carlinhos Brown will also perform. Ibeyi, the French-Cuban duo who have taken the music world by storm over the past year, will be the ambassadors of the festival, signaling Musicabana’s commitment to connecting Cuba’s musical past with its promising future.

La Habana, Cuba. – Hoy comienza en La Habana el Festival Havana World Music con la participación de una decena de bandas cubanas y foráneas, muchas de ellas representantes de una nueva ola de música latina alternativa, cuya sede estará establecida en el Centro Cultural Fábrica de Arte Cubano.Entre los artistas foráneos invitados a esta tercera edición se encuentran el cantante, compositor y productor español Juanito Makandé, músico que fusiona el flamenco tradicional con funk y jazz y el francés Sargento García.
Mientras por la parte cubana estarán presentes el contrabajista Yelsy Heredia, la joven baterista Yissy García y su proyecto Bandancha, y la agrupación Yoruba Andabo.
Los conciertos previstos en la agenda del Festival Havana World Music que comienza hoy, están anunciados para las ocho de la noche en las naves No.1 y No.4 del Centro Cultural Fábrica de Arte Cubano.

El tradicional Coloquio y Festival de Música y Poesía Nicolás Guillén, que organiza la Fundación que lleva el nombre del Poeta Nacional, vuelve entre los días 22 y 24 de marzo, para celebrar su décima edición al calor del tema África y su diáspora, y estará dedicado al aniversario 130 de la abolición de la esclavitud en Cuba y al 50 de la publicación de Biografía de un cimarrón, de Miguel Barnet.

YORUBA ANDABO / Afro Cuban Traditions is the name of the concert that the emblematic Cuban company will perform on the 16th of March at the Mella theater, cultural center of almost 2000 seats, located in Vedado, the most cosmopolitan district of Havana.
Fifteen artists on stage, including singers, percussionists and dancers will make up a vibrant and colorful spectacle of almost 2 hours, which includes Congo, Yoruba, Abakuá and Rumba.

We don’t remember medicine until we are ill. It’s the same with our Yoruba medicine , many don’t remember traditional medicine until Western medicine fails them. To be fair, there are just as many or maybe even more for whom native medicine is the first port of call for the simple reason that they cannot afford the cost of Western medical care . But where there are means, the leaning is more towards Western medicine, until of course a problem is encountered that defies orthodox science.
Reasons why people use/don’t use traditional medicine vary, experiences vary. So many have only praises and some have regrets on using Yoruba herbal science. Why the variations? There’s no published directory of herbal practitioners, or widely acknowledged certification , so that there is no way of ascertaining the qualifications of a practitioner before you decide to place yourself in their care. In the days gone by, presumably word of mouth recommendation was all the certification required, and that’s at the root of the problem experienced by people who would use Yoruba herbal practitioners today. Just how many people who do use traditional medicine will own up to the fact? How do you get a recommendation when visits to Babalawo are seen by the educateratti as hush-hush.
